RUTHERFORD Queries and contacts are shown below. MY APOLOGIES FOR THE LONG DELAY IN POSTING QUERIES NEWER THAN WHAT YOU SEE HERE. Now that we have finally completed our year+ long distance move, and most of my books and many boxes of files have been put where I can use them again, I can get back to the details and our website. Look for an email from me soon to update all queries received over the years. If your email has changed in the past year or two or three, let me know.

Some editing may be done for clarity or space concerns,
and I don't always do surnames in CAPS, (editor's preference), but accuracy is important. Contributors should return and review their entries to keep them current.

CONTACT US via query@rutherfordgenealogy.org I'll respond to every email as soon as my schedule permits.
You'll likely hear back via my other email, cmrhere@aol.com. so "allow" those addresses to prevent SPAM filters from trapping me there. I do not post your name and email or anything else, unless you approve it via the sign-up page or email. Please include in your posting, as many dates or hints as possible for others to compare to on their charts.

I am researching Rutherford, Yost, Burton, Fleenor, Sorah
22Nov2004  Looking in SW Virginia, Tazewell, (formerly Jefferson) County.
Am trying to find a John D. Rutherford born abt 1815 in Roanoke, VA.
Married Nancy Burton, supposedly the daughter of Benjamin Burton.
I find him on 1850 Jefferson(Tazewell) County census and no where before or after that.
In 1880 his wife and one other child are on the Tazewell County, VA census.
John D. Rutherford may be buried in Concord Cemetery in Gratton, VA but they are not listed in online cemetery listings? There is no office on the church grounds.  Back in the day, the church and cemetery shared the same land.   Anyone having access to any location or family information that may help, please contact Chuck, in Texas, via email: cruthe1955@netscape.com aka ChuckRthrfrd on AIM

Fellow Rutherfords,  I am searching for information of the family of Robert Rutherford, a mason,  born in Earlston, Berwickshire in 1814.  He married Isabella Scott , born 1819, of Edrom, Berwickshire.
The family settled in Sprouston and had at least 9 children, Robert, Janet, Charles, Thomas, Margaret, Adam, Andrew, Isabella and Mary Jane.  Andrew is my Great-grandfather, who came to the US , in the 1870's I believe, and settled in Chicago.  I have some census info from the 1841,1861,1871 on the family in Sprouston.
On the 1881 census I have, I believe Charles living in Tweedmouth, Northumberland, and Thomas in Durham, England.  I have no further information on either Robert, father or son, born 1841. [Sprouston is in Scotland, in the Borders region.] Can you be of assistance?

Bill Thielbahr
Hello - I am part of a small group who are trying to unravel the various William Harrells of southwestern Virginia.  We all descend from Harrell families in and around the Wythe Co., VA area.  Our research is centered on the William Harrells living in the region between 1750 to 1850.  There are a lot of William Harrells to unravel - we've answered the easy questions and what remains are the very difficult ones.

In Mary Kegley's book "Early Adventurers of the Western Waters", Vol. 1, 1980 there is a marriage citation:  William HAROLD and Nancy RUTHERFORD with James NEWEL, Jr. as surety dated September 9, 1773.  This marriage took place in the area of Reed Creek in present day Wythe Co. between Crockett and Rural Retreat.  I believe the marriage location was in Montgomery Co. at the time.
Our research group knows a great deal about many of the Harrell families in the area, but there seems to be not a shred of information on who this William Harrell belongs to and who Nancy Rutherford belongs to.  It's as if the marriage took place and shortly thereafter one or the other, or both, died.

There is one piece of info that so far has not helped us but may in the future: the surety James Newell is related to, or is the same Capt. Newell, who owned land along side that of William Harrell of Wythe Co., spouse Martha.  This William Harrell (born abt 1750, died abt 1822) left a will in 1822 where this land location is mentioned.  It is possible that this William Harrell was previously married to someone other than "Martha", and that person could have been Nancy Rutherford.  But this is pure speculation.   Email:   tbar@srv.net  20Oct2005

Wal Rutherford
Hello All ... a few notes on my research hopes…
My Grand Father, James Smyth Rutherford, was born in Belfast, Ireland, 1843 to James Rutherford and Mary Smyth. , (Although born in Ireland it appears the family originated in Scotland.) He married Elizabeth Catherine Totton on 26/10/1862 at age 20, and Elizabeth 19years of age. They married in St Anne’s Church of Ireland, Belfast in 1862. The occupation of James father, according to the marriage cert., was a Carpenter, Catherine’s father was a servant and Joseph Lindsay was a witness for James.
A child James was conceived in 1865 and they immigrated to Port Phillip, Australia, on the Oceanica in 1865. I have fairly well detailed research of his descendants from there; my problem arises with ancestry.
My interest is obviously in the period before Belfast. Other names of interest: Shaw (Isle of Skye) McSwan/McSween, Hayes, Miller, Omant, Rodgers, West, Wells and Whitbourne to name a few.
I have been researching our family in Aust. Anything I can do to help in that respect, I will be happy to do. The page is certainly growing and I congratulate Carolyn on the effort she has put in.
Kind Regards, Wal Rutherford,

I am looking for a Colonel Rutherford that resided in North Carolina and was married to a Mary Rutherford. I am not sure of what her maiden name was before (but i believe  it was Irons) but I do know that they had a daughter named Elizabeth Rutherford, who moved from there to Pennsylvania after words. She had a son she named George Irons
I am trying to find out about the Colonel but I can't find a first name on him. Just that he was a man of power in N.C. and had a plantation and in the war but I do not know if it was civil or world war one.
Is there anyway you could help me find this person for I feel he is part of the beginning line up of my family genealogy of the  Irons-Lyons-Walker linage. Thank you for your time and help, Respectfully yours
